I support the art of learning by offering a targeted program for children and teens who need more help with learning how to learn, and how to like themselves while they learn. I tutor in a dedicated studio space in Travis Heights where we have art supplies at the ready and plenty of space to move. During my 20 years of teaching, I've worked with a wide variety of age groups. My approach shifts depending on the age of your child and his or her specific goals and needs.
Through one-on-one tutoring your child or teen will learn to love the following:
Letters: reading, literature
Numbers: shapes, math, algebra, math games
Focus: sensory games, rhythmic exercises, give and take,
Comprehension: memory skills, critical thinking, finding meaning
Expression: acting, voice, movement, poetry, text memorization, auditioning
“I started taking lessons with Jason to improve my acting and projection for a school play. After that, I just kept on taking lessons. As a result of Jason’s expert guidance and inspiring example, I now feel far more confident as an actor playing a wide range of characters and emotions as well as more secure in the emotions I feel when playing myself.”
Assessments are creative, playful, and interactive. Children will move, work with numbers, and practice reading and writing. Older children and teens will be asked to demonstrate examples of reading and writing, understanding of math concepts, or be invited to share creative projects and artistic goals.
Learning Sessions are one to five times weekly depending on students need. Art of Learning Immersion Intensives may be specially arranged to complete a project or cross hurdles in learning reading or math comprehension.
Sessions are $70 an hour. The discounted rate is $260 for 4 sessions, $520 for 8 sessions, and $720 for 12 sessions, paid in advance.
To secure your placement all sessions must be paid in advance monthly.
Payment can be made by check, cash, credit card (3% processing added), or Venmo.
Arts-integrated education is especially powerful for students with special learning needs. I have extensive experience supporting students with learning and behavioral challenges. I work one-on-one with students to tailor activities exactly to the way they learn best.
“We are in our second year working with Mr. Phelps in mathematics. My son went from dreading math to absolutely loving it. Mr. Phelps makes learning fun (whether it’s breaking out a hackey-sack to toss back and forth while doing warm-up drills, or explaining concepts in his wide array of accents), and my son looks forward to his math class every week. ”
“I am the good student who gets her work done when I work with Jason. He makes it easy, fast and neat.”
